Sandy Beach Championships 2006 : The Sandy Beach Championships are held annually on the weekend following the Fourth of July holiday.This year's contest was held in 2to5 ft windswell waves.The contest was also used as a fundraiser to send long time contest organizer and promoter Bob Thomas' Ohana to join family member Hannah Thomas(photos # 43,54,71,72,74) as Hawaii's representitive in the Miss Teen USA contest being held in Palm Springs,California this coming August .A photo of her is set on the Collector's Edition 2006 Sandy Beach Bodysurfing Contest T-Shirt. Each year the amount of contestants have grown.This year the large number of entrants in the youth divisions made it necessary to hold the finals of all divisions on an extended second day.Luckily the wave and surf conditions improved. Stiff side shore breezes and clear Hawaiian skies made the color of the slamming shore break outstanding. Try the 'slideshow' veiwing feature with your favorite sounds in the background.It will make veiwing the nearly 200 photos that much more enjoyable. Aloha,Doug

Sandy's. May 21,2006. : Sunday swell.Very crowded beach,shore, and water conditions.A rising south swell shows very inconsistent,3ft plus, wave sets.All day low tide brings treacherous,doubling waves on a shallow sandbar.Sponge riders grab most of the larger sets while bodysurfers look in vain for rideable waves.Call it a good day if you can leave without an injury.

Flossie : Flossie,a Category 3 Hurricane, generated 15 to 20 foot waves along the Big Island's South and East Coast.High winds brought rough surf conditions to the East,South, and West coasts of the Hawaiian Islands' chain.Flossie took almost a week to clear the State leaving mostly wind damge. Flossie's high winds also aided in the spreading of a 3,000 acre mountain wildfire in O`ahu's north central island corridor. Flossie was brought to it's knees when the normal Hawaiian tradewinds sheared the top of Flossie's power stack reducing Flossie to a tropical storm. The mostly rough surf was in the 6 to 9 ft (3 to 4 ft Hawaiian) range supported with mostly sunny,light blue, skies.These were welcome waves as the normal Southern Hemisphere wave machines have not generated any significant swell for well over a month. High Surf Advisory,Large Wind Swell 30Jan2008 : Aloha all, Strong ,consistently gusting easterly winds brought on large,rough , dangerous surf conditions.The high winds also sprayed beachgoers with sand loosened by eager bodysurfers rushin to enter the water.The high winds easily turned sun-blocking beach umbrellas into stiff,metal splined, reverse windsocks .It was enter the water at your own risk.. 2008 Sandy Beach Bodysurfing Championships : This year's Sandy Beach Bodysurfing Championship should be renamed 2008 Sandy Beach BodySLAMMING Championships. Surf with 3 to 7 ft faces launched riders into fist-sized, rolling cobblestones and football-sized coral blocks brought off the ocean's bottom by surging,retracing,cross-peaking southern swells.
